WPL Round 13 - GSL vs. Ashburton
Ashburton has completed its second long road trip in two weeks with a 2:0 win against the Gippland Soccer League at the Latrobe City Sports Stadium on Saturday 26 July. This win sees Ashburton remain second on the WPL ladder 4 points behind league leaders, Box Hill Inter and 6 points ahead of its nearest rival Sandringham.
In the first half the Ashy midfielders linked well with the forwards displaying a great understanding, with some outstanding "flick ons" and "one twos". The first goal resulted form a superb cross in from Paula Bernini to Kristin Stensholt who ably side footed the ball into the back of the net. The second goal was scored by Christine Pfeiffer who rounded the GSL keeper on a tight angle and slammed the ball into the left hand top corner. The ball movement in the first half was smooth and continuous generating numerous chances, however the GSL defence held strong.
In the second half the GSL played more players behind the ball, diminishing the Ashburton chances of scoring heavily. Despite this defensive structure Ashburton continued to generate scoring chances with near misses to Paola Bernini and Kristen Stensholt. A great sign for Ashburton was the return of premier goal keeper Antoinette Michail at the 78 minute mark, after several months out with a serious hand injury.
