WPL Round 12 - Bendigo vs. Ashburton
Ashburton has made up for the disappointing draw in the first half of the season by easily accounting for Bendigo 2:0 on Saturday. Despite fielding a significantly weakened side for the second week in a row the Ashy team shrugged off the effects of the long trip and played some outstanding football. The first goal scored by Paola Bernini from a powerful header was set up by a precise cross in line with the back post from Annabelle Gibney. The second goal was flicked in by Rosey Mortellaro following a corner taken by Paola. The midfield was once again outstanding with fantastic contributions from Rosey Mortellaro, Kristin Stensholt and Cindy Dussoye creating numerous scoring opportunities, especially in the first half. Gulcam Koca was also burning down the right wing, presenting numerous crosses, however nobody managed to get on the end of these to convert. Bendigo also had opportunities to score with 2 attacking moves where their forward was one out with Ashburton goalie Steph Hedegus. One of these was saved by Steph and the other was fired over the cross bar.
It was especially pleasing to see Sara Walsh start in this game, her first start after overcoming a knee injury in the pre-season. Unfortunately Sara sustained another injury during the game and may miss some more of the season. This injury forced a re-jig of the lineup and saw Paola Bernini move from attack to defence, and Lisel Woods come onto the pitch for her second game of the season.
Meanwhile the reserves maintained their winning ways with a 4:1 victory over the Vipers. The margin could have been much greater if the girls had made the most of their chances. Unfortunately this game was also marred by an injury, this time to Ebony Davies. It was great to see Amelia Garnet get some time on the pitch after some outstanding form in the unbeaten U18 Ashburton side.
