WPL Round 11 - Box Hill vs. Ashburton
In an exciting, but ultimately disappointing game, the WPL leaders stamped their authority over a gallant Ashburton at Wembly park on Friday night.
Ashburton, weakened substantially by injury and unavailable players took the lead at the 30 minute mark through a great individual effort by Annabelle Gibney. Gibney had taken on a Box Hill defender to find herself one out with the keeper and she duly drilled the shot. Prior to this goal Gibney had made several dangerous forays into the forward line but lacked support for any productive crosses. For most of the first half Box Hill had dominated possession but had not managed to score despite producing numerous corners and receiving plenty of free kicks in their half. Louisa Bisby for Box Hill seemed to be everwhere, defending strongly when Ashburton attacked and making her height count in the Box Hill forward line. Steph Hegedus, the Ashburton keeper, was again outstanding, thwarting every effort of Box hill to equalize.
The second half started well for Ashburton with several promising attacks on goal by Kristin Stensholt, however the shots went directly to the Box Hill keeper who was also playing well for the home side. At the 78 minute mark Kristin finally sunk one - 2:0 to Ashburton. Just one minute later Box Hill replied with a great strike to Amanda Lawless which proved too difficult for Steph to save. Box Hill now dug deep and scored two more goals in quick succession, courtesy of Georgia Koutrouvelis and Jessica Humble. All in all a very disappointing result for Ashburton, who perhaps relaxed somewhat after the second goal - not something you can afford to do against a strong outfit like Box Hill.
