WPL Round 8 - 11 May 2008 Seniors Ashburton has climbed to 3rd place on the WPL ladder after a solid 2:0 win against the Preston Lions at BT Connor Reserve. The first goal was a disaster for the lions after a sharp cut back from the touch line deflected off a defender, wrong footing the keeper and trickling in for an own goal. The second goal was a result of a brilliant effort by Seyma Erenli. A diagonal ball coming in from the right flank was picked up by Seyma who turned in one motion and booted the ball into the left corner. Despite being 2 goals down Preston continued to push forward and at one point Stephanie Brewer , the Ashy keeper, jumped high to her right to prevent a cross which would have resulted in a certain goal. In another great passage of play Sara Lovett, the Lions striker, was one on one with Steph Brewer - Steph picked the right option and saved the shot.
These saves were very important in the context of the game and resulted in Ashy taking a score line of 2:0 into the break. In the second half Ashburton had lots of possession but could not break through the stubborn Preston defence. Nabila Saliba the Lion's goalie made some great saves for the Lions preventing any blowout.
Reserves The Ashburton Reserves maintained their winning way in a very physical encounter on Sunday. In this game there was a great display of flank work by Liesel Woods and Francesca Marinucci who provided endless crosses to the forwards who made the most of the supply, especially in the first half. The midfielders had lots of possession in this game and forwards Paola Bernini and Kelly Sandefur were outstanding. With a half time score of 5:1 the Ashy girls were happy to concentrate on maintaining possession and holding their shape for the second half.
