WPL Round 1 - Wednesday March 26 2008
In a tight contest which featured many errors by both teams Ashburton defeated the Casey Comets 1:0. The game was held under appalling weather conditions, with torrential rain marring the contest frequently during the night. Ashy's goal came early courtesy of Meghan Archer, however Ashy had many chances during the night to put the Comets away. With significantly more corners and creditable shots at goal it would have been a travesty if Ashburton had lost, however the game was in doubt right to the end with the Comets earning a couple of free kicks close to Ashy's goal.
The Ashy team looked very different to the side that made the finals last year, with Seyma Erenli (inj) sitting on the bench and Annabell Gibney out injured. However, the new players for Ashy ( Meghan Archer, Kelly Eaton, Christine Pfeiffer and Rebecca Jacovides) were very promising and it looks like Ashburton will be challenging the WPL powerhouses Box Hill and Heidleberg again this year.
