Ashburton's Women's Premier League season started promisingly on Sunday when both the reserves and seniors defeated the Eastern Lions. Both teams were impressive with many newly recruited players playing well in their first games for Ashburton.
Reserves
Despite a tentative start and a goalless first half the reserves came
out fairly easy winners in the end with a final score of 0 -3. The
Ashburton side contained many new promising players and obviously the
players took some time to gel. This side will get much better as the
season progresses and will challenge for top honours once again.
Seniors
In a very impressive performance the Ashy seniors demolished the
Eastern Lions 0:7. With a very different side to the 2006 side which
reached the WPL finals it was always going to be interesting to see how
Ashy would perform in 2007. With Millie McLean and Sara Walsh (both 14
year olds!) performing well in defence the lions rarely mounted any
serious attacks and Mrs. Michel only had to make one save. Annabelle
Gibney and Amy Jackson combined exceptionally well together delivering
6 of the seven goals, while Danielle Jackson chimed in for one.
