Saturday 20 February 2010
The first half began with Heidelberg favoured by a strong westerly wind blowing to Westall Rd. end of the ground. Ashburton spent a lot of time in defence but held on strongly to deny the Burgers any opportunities. Despite the wind, Ashburton did manage shots at goal with the best attempt coming from a free awarded when Rachel Lamb was fouled. The Sarah Lovett shot went over the top, but was tantalisingly close. The Bergers were playing their usual physical game and drawing plenty of fee kicks from the referee. At the 35 minute mark Heidelberg’s efforts stepped up a notch and they seemed to be winning the one-on ones and certainly looked stronger in the air. Ashburton defended well despite giving away 3 corners in a row. Linette Lavadure came on just before half time to replace an injured Bonnie Barnes who was fouled off the ball in what seemed like a blatant red card offence.
With the heat in the mid 30s, all players welcomed the half time break. Megan Archer came on for Heidelberg and had an immediate impact despite her lack of condition. After 14 minutes of tough dour football Stacy Louras made a great run and passed to Lovett; Lovett passed to Lamb and a scramble ensued not far from the Bergers goal. Once again, the Bergers gave away a fee kick which saw Sara Walsh narrowly miss over the top bar. Christina Leland replaced a tired Chloe Drinozky who had run all day. At the 75 minute mark we saw the play of the day. Leland took possession, passed to Gulcan Koca who precisely crossed into the box where Elvana Curo was waiting and duly saluted. Unfortunately for Ashburton Heidelberg equalised when Archer received the ball from a perfectly weighted corner and tapped the ball into the back of the net. Normal time finished with both teams one goal each.
Extra time started poorly for Ashy with a penalty awarded to the Bergers for a handball. Archer made no mistake. 5 Minutes later a perfect Sara Walsh corner was rewarded with a scintillating strike by Liesel Woods. The game was tied at 2 all and Ashburton seemed to have gained the ascendancy again drawing fee kicks close to goal, however conversion remained a problem.
The penalty shoot out saw some great saves by the Heidelberg keeper who had played well all game and Heidelberg took the Hellenic Cup 4:2 on penalties. All in all, this was a great effort by Ashburton who played a close to full strength Heidelberg side and signalled that both teams will be prominent in the top half of the WPL ladder in 2010.

Hellenic Cup 2010 - South East Program – Women’s Competition
Ashburton v South Melbourne - B – Saturday 13 February 2010
Ashburton easily took the points in this game setting them up for the Grand Final next week. The first half was fairly lackluster with Ashburton constantly attacking and the ball rarely drifting into the South Melbourne half. A poor goal kick saw Ellvana Curo run onto the ball and score easily at the 5 minute mark. Rachel Lamb followed suit 5 minutes later. Gucan Koca was becoming particularly damaging on the right, taking the ball down the wing and crossing precisely, while Rachel Lamb was mirroring her efforts on the left. Christina Leland was a constant threat with the copious supply coming her way. At the 28 minute mark, Lamb took the ball down the left and finished off with a goal. Despite constant pressure by Ashburton, South Melbourne managed to limit the scoring opportunities and would have been happy with a 3 nil scoreline at half time.
The second half began with Ashburton straight into attack. A well engineered pass by Christina Leland to Ellvana Cuco, in what was the play of the day, saw Ashy score its 4th goal. At the 50 minute mark Chloe Drinoczy made the most of a scramble in front of goal and duly saluted. Azize Erenli came onto the ground and livened things up, providing a much needed X-factor on the day. Not long after taking the field, Azize drew a penalty after a poor tackle in the box and Curo made no mistake. Seconds later Azize headed the ball over the top of the net following a perfect cross from Lamb. Azize followed with a shot over top and minutes later she set up Sarah Lovett for Ashburton’s 7th. Lovett scored again at the 67 minute mark after finding herself one on one with the South keeper after a blistering run through the middle of the park. Stacy Louras finished the game off with a particularly nice lob over the goalkeepers head resulting in the 9th goal to Ashburton.
Goal Scorers: Ellvana Curo – 3; Sarah Lovett – 2; Chloe Drinoczy – 1; Stacy Louras – 1; Rachel lamb -2.
