WPL Round 11 - GRFA v Ashburton - Sunday 28 June 2009
thumb_dsc_1179med.jpgAshburton was back on the winning list this weekend with a 3:1 win over the GRFA at Howard Glover Reserve. The reserves also won 3:0.
While the main game was a fairly scrappy affair Ashburton was thankful that it came away with a win as at least 5 regular senior players were absent on the day. The reserves who stepped up all played well, which says something about the depth in the club. In the first half Ashburton had quite a few chances, but failed to capitalised once again. The first goal from Paola Bernini came from a nice tap in after the ball was cut back from out wide towards the back post. Unfortunately GRFA equalised soon after when Ashburton goalie, Tet Michail, went to punch the ball but did not get enough purchase on it and the ball dropped without clearing the area. Anne Salte, from Geelong saw the open goal and rammed the ball past Laura Shaw who could not stop the shot. With one goal a piece at half time Ashburton would have been ruing the missed opportunities.

Ashy started the second half well, with Laura Shaw and Steph Hore getting lots of the ball on their respective wings and making some telling crosses to the advantage of the Ashburton forwards. Unfortunately, in what seems to be this year's theme, the team missed many scoring opportunities where an Ashy player had the opposition goalie one on one. Rachel Lamb had one such chance in the second half but was tackled late by a Geelong defender, halting a certain goal. At the 56 minute mark Peta Lipec took the ball down the wing and cut back to the penalty spot where Paola Bernini was positioned and duly saluted with a side-footed tap in. Then with 5 minutes to go, Giselle Fields came onto the pitch and with her first touch, side stepped a GRFA defender and shot the ball into the top right corner, sealing the match.

alex.jpgAlex Natoli from the Ashburton Women’s Soccer Club has been selected for the Australian U14 soccer squad. Alex has been playing soccer for 6 years.  She started at Croydon City Arrows and played there for 3 years and then moved to Ashburton Women’s Soccer Club 3 years ago. Alex has represented Victoria in 4 outdoor teams and 4 Futsal teams. She was selected in the U14 State team this year for the first National Championships of this age group, which were held in Canberra. At the Nationals in Canberra a squad of 30 girls was named to attend a 4 day training camp at the Australian Institute of Sport, and from this the final  Australian team was selected. The team will have a three day camp in Sydney and then leave for Ho Chi Min City to play in the Festival of Football from 26th June-1st July. Alex's favourite position is Centre Back, and loves playing in defence. She has really enjoyed playing with Ashburton and this year has been given a scholarship to the NTC program. It is a great achievement to be named an Australian player and she is really thrilled to be representing her country.

Ashy humiliated 3 nil by Comets

WPL Round 10 Ashburton v Casey  Comets – Sunday  21 June 2009
Ashburton suffered a humiliating 3 nil loss to the Casey Comets yesterday and now appear to have lost their grip on a finals berth. The first half began cautiously with neither side penetrating the respective defences. Sarah Lovett had the first chance for Ashburton at the 12 minute mark when the Casey keeper hit the ground but the defence held strong and cleared the ball.  At the 20 minute mark Ashy had a lucky escape following a free kick due to Rosie Bureta infringement. Casey took the free very quickly before the defence was organised and Tet Michail had to stretch full length to her right to make the save.  Ashburton composed itself following this debacle and a Christine Pfeiffer  shot spilled to Megan Thornton, but unfortunately her attempt sailed over the crossbar. Minutes later disaster struck when Tet came off her line and Sarah Walsh lost her footing leaving an open goal which the Comets did not fail to take advantage of.  Ashburton rallied with strong scoring attempts to Thornton, Lovett and Lipec, but luck seemed to have deserted Ashburton once again.
The opening stanza of the second half was dominated by the Comets with 2 corners and 2 chances within the first 5 minutes. Ashburton was clearly on the back foot and struggling, missing targets in the midfield and turning the ball over. Lisa Cloke was having a blinder for the Comets and was dominating the mid field. Ashburton coach, Chris Michael brought on Kristen Stensholt after 60 minutes and Annabelle Gibney  a few minutes later but Casey was relentless in their pursuit of a win. The Casey defence was impenetrable and cleared the ball precisely to deny Ashburton.  79 minutes in a Casey counterattack saw the second goal lobbed over the head of the Ashy keeper and the sealer came 3 minutes later when a Casey shot deflected off an Ashburton defender.
